With black TRD lettering on the headrests and all-season floormats, the 4Runner feels refreshed. Inside, once again the 4Runner shows its age, but also offers just enough newness with the Venture special edition touches. The 4Runner is comfortable off the road, and on the road, those rugged mannerisms show themselves. With the Yakima tires, it’s an even bumpier performance. The 4Runner has a tall posture so it offers a great vantage point for the driver, but it also drives more like a pickup truck than your typical SUV or crossover. Four-wheel drive is available and expected for a vehicle designed to go off the road. Additionally, the five-speed automatic transmission feels outmatched and outdated. All in all, the 4Runner’s engine is wholly utilitarian. It does its job but offers neither thrills nor refinement. But if you’re looking for exhilaration, you will be disappointed. It’s good, adequate power from one of Toyota’s most solid engines. The RAV4 is powered by a 4.0-liter V6 engine that’s good for 270 horsepower and 278 lb./ft. The difference between the two cars felt like I entered a time machine (and, it should be noted, the Gladiator uses a similarly-aged V6 yet does much more with it).The 4Runner’s performance is the epitome of consistency, but also shows why some of the SUV’s competitors have surpassed it as the powertrain is quite dated, despite its steady output. Want more proof? I drove a Jeep Gladiator right after the 4Runner, and that Toyota glow melted away very quickly. Indeed, it’s easy to get sucked in by this Toyota’s off-road-ready charm. It’s not hard to look at the portly, pricey Land Cruiser and think it should be about 1,000 pounds lighter, $40,000 less expensive and place more emphasis on off-road ability than luxury - ideally while retaining its cool appearance and the sense of security offered by its capability and reliability. This generation of the iconic Land Cruiser has been around a while, and the flaws are apparent. The 4Runner is what we want the Land Cruiser to be.
